Not all ghosts are scary! ©

We were on our way to the museum, it was a school trip. The most common place for a trip from school was the museum. They had no other place to go. The teachers thought that a school trip to the museum was educational. But the actual truth was that, nobody saw the display in the museum.

The museum attendants usually had a hard time handling the students; therefore we never went to the same museum twice.

My friends and I were sitting in the bus and chatting. Our gang was considered to be the coolest in school. Reason being, everyone knew how to have fun. Meghna, my best friend was sitting with her boyfriend.

Yes, I was single. My friends used to say Anuj (another gang member!) had a thing for me. I really did not care. So there I was, sitting in the bus, staring out of the window. I wanted something different out of my life.

Something, that would actually make me feel special and different.

There was a huge bang outside the bus and the bus stopped. We were in the middle of nowhere. We were all asked to get out of the bus. The bus was literally smoking. I looked here and there for any mall or shopping complex, but I could not find any. All I could see is a line of trees and inside it we could get glimpses of a cottage.

I don’t know why, but I started walking towards the cottage. It was as if something super natural was pulling me towards it.

In about 5 minutes I was in front of the cottage door. I looked here and there, I found nobody close to me. I knocked on the door twice. Nobody opened the door. My mind was telling me to walk away. But my legs were not moving. My hand automatically went to the door knob, and it unlocked the door.

As the door opened, I closed my eyes and I was inside the darkness of the house. There was something really spooky about the house. Suddenly adrenaline rushed through my body and I sprinted towards the door. I tried to open it, but it did not open. I tried to kick the door, but my foot became heavy as soon as it reached the door.

I immediately understood that the house did not want me to leave. I went back inside and saw a staircase. I did not understand what to do. Yes, I believed in ghosts. But I did not believe they meant any harm to us.

I climbed up the staircase, and the staircase looked centuries old. It was squeaky and made a weird creaky sound when I took each step. When I reached the first floor, the staircase collapsed.

“Shit!” I whispered to myself.
“Don’t worry, its just that its too old…” Said a voice from behind me. My reflex was to scream.
“Shhh… please I’m not a ghost!” said the voice. I finally had the guts to turn around and look at the boy. He had short hair, and looked about my age. His dressing style showed he was from a very rich family.

“What are you doing here?” I asked him.
“The same as you… I was also attracted by this house yesterday… but I could not get out!” he said. I did not say anything and looked around. The house was really very scary.
“By the way, I’m Tarang…” he said.
“I’m Pragya…. Nice to meet you!” I said politely.
“There are no signs of ghosts here you know!” he said. I looked at him for exactly 5 seconds and then said “How the hell do you think we got stuck here?!”
“Maybe something wrong with the floor and house, its pretty old!” he said.
“You don’t believe in ghosts do you?” I asked him.
“No I don’t, they are just in books.” He said arrogantly. I did not reply to him. I started walking towards the room closest to me. I knew there must have been some reason of me being in this house.

I entered the room and the door slammed shut behind me. “Quit playing jokes with me Pragya!” said Tarang from the other side.

“Tarang open the door and get inside! Its dangerous out there!” I said. Suddenly I heard him struggling. I tried to open the door, but I could not. It was stuck.

I turned around and saw Tarang standing in front of me. I was shocked to see him there. He had no way of coming inside. He took a step towards me, and I started moving backwards. I knew he was a ghost. I reached to a dead end, when I was at the door. He came closer and then suddenly he said “Pragya…… My body is still alive… please find it and take me outside…”

His ghost vanished right in front of me. I looked into the blank air and then suddenly the door behind me opened. I saw Tarang’s body lying on the floor. I had found his body, but he was still. He looked dead.

Suddenly Tarang’s spirit appeared right in front of me. He was not melting into his own body like I imagined. He was just standing there still.
“Why are you not in your body?” I asked him.
“Because only one thing can connect me to my body…” he said.
“And what is that?” I asked.
“You…” he said blankly.

I burst out laughing. I knew he was just kidding. “I showed you your body! What else do I have to do?” I asked him.
“The ghosts said, you have to kiss me…”
“I thought you did not believe in ghosts…” I said.
“I met them… they are all around you… Though you cant see them… they brought us here for a specific purpose…” He said.

I thought about Tarang. He was a total stranger to me, I did not know him, but then it was different. I had asked god for something different, and he had granted my wish. I did not say anything and went and sat next to Tarang’s body. Yes, he was handsome. Then I realized I wanted to kiss him. I did not hesitate and bent down to kiss his lips. The moment our lips met, everything around us changed. It was as if the world was spinning and then I realized he was kissing me back too. I opened my eyes and saw the house was totally different. It looked brand new.

I got up, and he got up next to me. “Ummm.. I think we should leave…” I said, avoiding eye contact with him.
“I love you!” he said and pulled me into his arms again. I did not resist, infact I liked the fact that he held me. It seemed as if I knew his soul forever. We got out of the house and saw the house looked exactly the same from outside. We held hands while walking into the ground where the bus was waiting.

From then on, we always were together. So I would say, my soul mate was found by the help of ghosts.

A Rare Birthday ©

It's Natasha's birthday today. We were really good friends once. But things got wrong and we didn't even want to see each others face. From good friends we became good enemies. But still I can't forget the good times we both had. And here I am at her place on her birthday. You see, we're not really enemies any more but we're not even good friends. We're just friends who like to talk to each other. I've never visited her over a year now and here I am going to her place for the get-together. I guess I still consider her my friend.

I rung the door-bell, Natasha came running to answer the door. "You're the first one Ria! Come on in!"
"I'm the first? And I thought that I was late! Anyways, Happy Birthday!", saying this I handed her the present.

We went in her room and chatted for sometime. You know, the usual stuff. After a while, the rest of the friends arrived and the party began. I didn't know much people at the party. I just came there just because it was Natasha's birthday and she had asked me a lot of times to make sure that I was coming. We all danced and had loads of fun and it was about time for me to go home.

Natasha was seeing all her friends off and I was waiting for my mum to pick me up. Natasha came up to me and said, "Hey Ria, thanks a lot for coming. It really means a lot."

I was surprised. I never expected her to say those things to me. But I guess the friendship we had would never change because of a silly fight. I smiled and replied, "Why? You thought that I wouldn't come? We're friends remember!"

"I actually expected you to come but I'm just glad you did. I hope that you didn't get bored."
"Well I'm always gonna be there for you! So, you don't have to be glad. That's what friends are there for!"
"Yeah you're right. Let's be friends forever. No matter what happens, we'll always be great friends!"
"Yeah, I promise!"
We both smiled at each other. Now we both were glad. Suddenly I heard a car horn and my mum was there to pick me up. I got into the car and waved Natasha goodbye.

Although I didn't know most of the people at the party but there was one thing I got. I got my friend back. Sometimes you have to do boring stuff to make your friends happy and that's exactly what I did and I felt good. Now I am just as glad as Natasha that I went to her place.

First date! ©

“But Pragya, I want to be myself for my first date!” I said to my best friend.
“Today you’re going to act like a girl Shruti, now shut up and let me get you ready!” Pragya said while working on my face.
“I wonder if I could ever win an argument from you!” I said in the most irritated voice.

She smiled and continued doing something on my face.

I was going on my first date with my boyfriend Rohit. Even though we had been dating for 3 months, my mom had allowed me to go for the first time.

“Here you go!” Pragya said with a final touch of eyeliner on my eyes. She turned around my chair and I looked into a mirror. It was a reflection of a complete stranger. My hair was pinned up in a way that only two strands on curls were falling on my face.

“Is that really me?” I managed to say. She started laughing on that. “Shruti, you really do underestimate yourself, don’t you?”

Before I could say anything the door bell rang, I was going to get up and run to the door when Pragya said “Shruti act a bit like a girl! Please!!”

I looked at her for exactly 5 seconds and then said “OKAY!”
She was grinning widely at me; she rushed to my closet and took out a pair of sandals given to me by my mother.

“How come I have never seen you wear these?” She asked.
“I have never worn them.” I said blankly.
“Well, these would be perfect with your dress. Now wear them and I will go attend to Rohit.” She smiled and then went out the door.

I waited for the door to close and then sighed. I did not know how I landed up with the perfect guy. I looked at the watch it was 7:45 pm. He said he would come to pick me up at 8:00 pm. This was his limit of perfection. I looked into the mirror and said to myself “What did he see in me?”

I got of the stairs gently and then looked at Rohit with his black colored suit. He had a bow tie, and was sitting in front of my mother. My mother looked at him with her eyes wide open. She then turned around and looked at me. Her smile was gentle.

She finally approved of our relationship! I thought to myself. Just as I got down the staircase, Rohit was right next to me. He held out his elbow for me to hold. I tugged on to him. He looked at me and said “You’re looking beautiful!”

“Thank you!” I said, while I felt my cheeks burn. My mom came up to me and said “Enjoy your date!” I nodded.

She turned to Rohit and said “Have her home by 10”
“Yes I will ma’am!” He said with a smile. We walked outside the door. He opened the car door for me and then went to his seat.

“So… where are we going?” I asked.
“It’s a surprise..” he said with the kindest smile and drove.

He turned around into a dark alley and stopped the car. He opened my door and held my hand. I got of his car. The alley was totally empty. He clapped his hands twice and the lights turned on. I just looked at the alley there was a spotlight on a table for two. Rohit came up behind me and hugged me. Suddenly music started playing in the background.

He backed off and then put his hand forward and said “Shall we?”
I held his hands gently and started dancing with him. His body was warm and with every move I got closer to him. At the end of the song he gave me a slight peck on my lips.

The dinner was set up so beautifully, that I did not even care to sense the taste. While driving back home, he said “I am going to leave this Town tomorrow, I will miss you Shruti…”

“You’re going?” I said shocked. Finally my mother had accepted him and he was leaving town.
“I will come here every week to see you...” he said with gentleness.

The car stopped in front of my house, but I did not care get off. I could not believe he was leaving town. We used to sit together at school, and in between classes we used to hold hands, kiss each other. But now he was going.

He opened my door and then kissed my hands gently and said “Shruti… we have our whole lives to ourselves… These years would feel like seconds…”

I kissed him and said “I will miss you!”
“I will miss you too…” He said. He walked me to the door and gave me a good night kiss.

I entered the house and saw Mom and Pragya looking at me with curious eyes.
“The date was beautiful!” I managed to say, and ran upstairs.

That was my first date with my boyfriend, and he had done everything to make my date special. This was the day, when I truly learned that he was the person who I was in love with, and the one who I was going to spend the rest of my life with.

A New Beginning ©

So, here I am at my new school. Well, school isn't the only new thing, it's new school, new city, new house and a lot of other new things. You see, my dad keeps getting transferred to new places, so I'm kinda used to all this stuff. But I still can't ignore the excitement of the new place, the fear of not fitting in and the the sadness of leaving old friends behind. But I'm going to stop thinking about this and make a brand new start. So, this is me, Nikki Sharma, starting at anew place, a new beginning.

I entered the school, went straight to the office and performed the usual rituals that every new student had to perform. By the time I was finished, it was already time for my first class so I quickly rushed to my home-room as I didn't want to be late on my very first day. I was in such a hurry that I accidentally crashed into someone. "Hey, what's the rush? Take it easy!", the girl whom I crashed into said. "I'm sorry" I apologized, "I'm new to this place....could you tell me where Room No. 56 is?"
"Room 56? Why, that's my home room! Let's go together! I'm Anuja by the way!"
"Nice to meet you Anuja! I'm Nikki."
"Nikki as in Nikki Sharma?"
"Yeah...how do you know my full name? Have we met before?"
"Of course silly! Don't tell me you don't know who I am! I'm Anuja Arora! We were in fourth standard together...do you remember me?"
"Oh yeah I remember! I'm sorry I didn't recognize you!You have changed so much!"
"So have you! Now let's hurry or our class teacher will eat us alive!"

The classes passed like a blur and soon it was our 'Free Hour'.
"Our school provides us with Free Hour. We are supposed to spend our Free Hour in other co-curricular activities. It depends on whatever you are most interested in and there are a variety of clubs which you can join, whichever fits you best", Anuja explained.

"Well that sounds like a cool thing. Let me take a look at the various clubs."
There were a variety of clubs to get started with. Clubs on books, music and what not. But the club that interested me the most was 'The Horror Freaks Club'. Now you may consider me a freak but I'm interested in this stuff. So I became a member of the club.

Well, the club as the name suggests was about nothing but paranormal stuff. The club conducted its daily meetings and the members discussed ghosts and spirit sightings, shared ghost stories and did other activities. I even made some friends there-Sakshi, Manan, Anshika, Yash, are a few of them. Sakshi reported that there was a sort of haunted manor in the city itself. So we decided to give it a try on Saturday.

Saturday arrived and we all reached the manor at sharp 6 p.m. We brought flash-lights with us and also a big rope which could be tied at each one's hand in case something happened. So, all prepared, we entered the manor. It was pitch dark inside and I have to admit that I was pretty scared myself. I think all of us was getting the creeps cuz Manan kept cracking silly jokes in order to keep the mood light. All of a sudden everything froze, m flashlight didn't work and the ropes around my friends' hands loosened and fell to the floor. And then I saw the most horrifying site of my life. All my club friends, Sakshi, Manan, Anshika, Yash...were floating up in the air and they were not human, they were something else, something silvery white, something like ghosts. I was petrified. Then Anshika or rather I should say Anshika's ghost said, "You don't need to be afraid of us Nikki. We are here to recruit you as our true club member."

"Wh-What d-do y-you mean?" I somehow managed to say those words.
"We mean that we truly want you as a part of our club. And that's possible only when you become like us."

"Nooooooooooooooooo!! I don't wanna be a ghost. I want to live my life." I ran as fast as I could but my legs weren't fast enough. I rushed out of the front door out into the overgrown garden. I was just a few feet away from the gate of the manor when I bumped into Anuja.
"Anuja run as fast as you can! This place is full of ghosts!" I tugged at her arm to run away with me. But Anuja didn't move. She was smiling. And slowly she turned like all others, silvery white and I could easily see through her. I was horrified

"You don't need to be afraid Nikki. I assure you that it won't hurt a bit."
I couldn't help it but some powerful, invisible force was pulling me back into the manor. My legs weren't obeying me. All my club mates and Anuja were closing in on me and then I felt a whoosh of air. I felt light and I saw my body lying at the floor.

Now I was one of them. I was a silvery white ghost. I wanted to cry but I wasn't human any more. I felt horrible.
"Hey it's okay! We're gonna have loads of fun!" Sakshi assured me.

Fun? How can one have fun as a ghost. Well now that I come to think of it, there's a lot of stuff I can do as a ghost. See, this is not exactly what I wanted but now that I'm a ghost, I can't help it. It's not that bad even. I always liked paranormal stuff and now I'm one of them. So, it is indeed a new beginning!

A lazy Sunday morning! ©

The boat had a whole in it, I tried to get water out of the boat, but the water was coming in very fast. I looked here and there for help, nobody was there. Suddenly the boat was gone, and I was there trying hard to swim out of the water. I was drowning.

I was woken up by a glass on cold water thrown on my face.
“You are always sleeping!! Cant you just wake up once on your own!?” said my mom. I opened one eye, looked at her with the saddest face I could ever make.
“But mom! Its 5 in the morning! And I slept at 2!” I said.

“PRIYA DUTTA! IF YOU DON’T GET UP RIGHT NOW! IM GONNA THROW YOU OUT OF THIS HOUSE!!!” my mum said.
“Why do you always have to put it that way mum?” I said while getting up.
“That’s because your generation does not listen to people, unless they are kicked in their ass!” said my mum getting up from my bed.

She had a serious problem with our generation; I always wondered what the reason was, though I never dared to ask her this. My mother had a serious temper issue.

Anyways, I decided to leave the issue of my mum’s temper. I was used to it everyday. I brushed my teeth and then decided to go to the breakfast table. My dad was sitting there with a newspaper in his hand. I went and sat next to dad and said a polite good morning to him. He replied back the same and we started eating.

My mum came when dad had finished and sat down next to me. She was very beautiful. Age had not affected my mother in anyway. I waited for mum to finish the food. It was Sunday, and we usually went out for a trip on Sunday. After mom finished her food, she sat there and started talking. I did not understand what she was saying, but I realized she was talking to me.

She did not say anything that would be awkward talking about. At the end of the conversation I realized that she was really a good conversation starter.

This was the first time she had talked to me properly in the 17 years of my life. I decided to tell her about the guy I have been going around with.

She was working in the kitchen when I went behind her and just generally asked her, “Mom what would you do if I told you I am dating the guy who lives next doors?”

She did not say anything, just turned around and faced me. She looked into my eyes and said “Priya, you are my only daughter…and I know you are dating him for a long time… you don’t have to pretend!”

I stood there with my mouth wide open, how did she get to know?! I thought to myself.

She smiled and then turned around and said “Priya, I am your mother. I would get to know anything in your life, even when you don’t tell me.” There was sadness in her eyes because I did not tell her this.

“But mom, this happened yesterday only… I did not get the chance to tell u..” I said. This part was true. Piyush (My neighbor) had asked me out yesterday.
“You decided to tell your friends first…” she said.
“Mom…. I was afraid you wont accept…” I said honestly.

She did not say anything and walked out of the kitchen. I realized that I was wrong in hiding that fact from her. Even though she is strict most of the times, she was really very open about all these things.
I decided to go up to my mother and ask for an apology. Mom was in her bedroom, sitting on the internet. (Yup! My mom sat on the net more than me!)

I went up to her and gave her a big hug and said “Mom, I promise I wont hide anything from you every again.”
Suddenly she looked at me and said “Well.. that guy is pretty good looking! He takes after his father…” she said as she winked at me.

What I learned from this incident is, sometimes you cannot tell your mother about your boyfriend in order to save your relationship with him. (I mean in order to stop your boyfriend from getting stolen by your mother!)

The rare school day! ©

I was having this awesome dream, I got to see my crush and me at a beach! Totally cool dream! But unfortunately I was woken up by my mother to go to school!

“Mom couldn’t you let me sleep for five more minutes?” I asked her in a irritated voice.
“Wake up or else you would miss your bus again!” she said and left the room.

I put the blanket on my face and went off to sleep again. I was woken up by a jug of water thrown on me. “WHAT??!” I said.
“You have to go to school today Shreya! Now wake up!”

I got off the bed totally irritated by how my mother could totally become the devil for me sometimes. I quickly got ready to go to school. I really did not like going to my boring school everyday.

I was as usual late to board the bus, I was given an irritated look by the bus driver. I ignored him. I saw Hita sitting with some hot dude. I decided to let her flirt with him. Hita is my best friend. She knows about my crush on Rahul, the guy who I dreamt about. I gave her a “Need to talk to you!” look and looked for a seat to sit on.

Only one was empty, and it was right next to this popular and so called hot girl. We were not in good terms, she was supposed to be Rahul’s girlfriend. I sat next to her and said a polite hello. Sanjana was my best friend 5 years ago, then suddenly she started becoming this bitch and our friendship slowly faded and was completely gone in some time.

She looked at me for exactly 5 seconds and then said “You fell for Rahul also!” and then started sobbing. “Hey! I did not do anything stop crying!” I said feeling totally awkward as everyone at the bus was staring at me.

“But you have a crush on him!!” she said it out so loud that the whole bus could hear her.
“Who told you this Sanjana?! Its not true!” I said trying to hide my panicky face. Suddenly she composed herself to her natural nasty face and said “Your so called best friend spent a day with me yesterday!” and she turned around looking out of the window.

My reflex was to look at Hita who was still flirting around with that guy. I got up and went to Hita, she looked at me smirked and then started flirting with that guy.

“Thanks for being such an awesome friend!” I said sarcastically and walked off and sat next to Sanjana. She was smiling and then her face became serious.

It was one lousy bus ride, to be more obvious something out of the routine in my life had to be negative. I found out that Sanjana was not that bad a person. She kept making short nasty comments on my fashion sense and my tomboyish attitude to distract me.

I walked to my class alone and saw Rahul staring at me continuously. It was totally obvious that he was doing that because he got to know about my crush on him. I did not even dare make an eye contact with him.

At recess unfortunately I wound up sitting with Sanjana again. This time I was ready for her nasty comments. But she surprised me by saying “Don’t fall into his stare… he does that to use you and throw you when he is done!”

“Well.. I guess.. ummm thanks…” I said, feeling totally awkward.
“No problem!” she said with a gentle smile. I saw kindness in her eyes for the first time.
“Why cant you be nice to people?” I asked her.
“They don’t deserve it… I remember 5 years ago I was treated like an outcast…” she said with a painful look in her eyes.
“Sanjana…. You should never change yourself according to the world…. I mean basically I think now the attitude you show… makes people hate you!” I said before I could clamp my mouth shut.
“Guys follow me like dogs…” she said and the bell rang. Recess was over.
“What happened to our friendship?” I asked before she could go to her class.
“I don’t know… but I really want us to be friends again……. Honestly you are going and making stupid friends!” she said sarcastically and walked off.

The rest of the school went by quickly. While going back I deliberately sat next to Sanjana, I ignored the gross making out of Hita with that poor guy.

When I entered the house I was smiling brightly. My mom asked me “What happened today? You look so happy!”
“Got back an old friend ma!” I said grinning widely at her.

This is how I got my old best friend back. We are still very good friends.
